Ruination of Porto Marghera can be seen either as the sign of economic failure
or the announcement of a new beginning. The Studio will place itself in the
latter optimistic scenario. As part of an incremental plan to renovate the
zone; we will challenge ourselves to design a 10-kilometer building
Why do we propose that? For two reasons: First, because we
believe that big problems call for ambitious proposals and second, because from
a pedagogical point of view, many interesting questions arises. For example:
Shall we design it as a piece of infrastructure or rather as a piece of landscape?
To what extent such a cyclopean building can work as a footprint that triggers
further development in Porto Marghera? How and where shall we place it? Is it a
straight line that bridges over the water channels, or it is much better that
it snakes around the industrial ruins? What if we place it beside the shore and
make it a linear building that creates a waterfront? Is it good that one single
architect designs a building of such scale? How do we plan the construction of
a mega structure like this? Shall we make it prefab? Is it a grid that can be
filled in during longer time span?
In term of use, it poses great challenges as well: how do
we incorporate many contents as possible in such a way to promote not only
intense urban life, but make also a statement regarding old zoning approaches?
For example, can we nowadays think of a building that accommodates both;
housing and industrial uses? Therefore, how can a building like this benefit
from the economic shift that now faces port areas in Europe that turned out the
activities from production to distribution?
These and others are the kind of questions that we invite
all the students to formulate during the workshop.

La rovina di Porto Marghera può essere vista sia come il segno del fallimento
economico o come l’annuncio di un nuovo inizio. Lo Studio si collocherà in
quest’ultimo scenario ottimistico. Come parte di un piano incrementale per
rinnovare la zona; sfidiamo noi stessi nella progettazione di un edificio lungo
10 km.
Perché questa proposta?
Per due motivi : primo, perché crediamo che i grandi
problemi richiedono proposte ambiziose e secondo, perché da un punto di vista
pedagogico, si pongono molte domande interessanti. Per esempio: dovremmo progettarlo
come un elemento infrastrutturale o piuttosto come un pezzo di paesaggio? In
che misura tale edificio ciclopico può funzionare come un ingombro che scatena
un ulteriore sviluppo a Porto Marghera? Come e dove dobbiamo posizionarlo? E’
una linea retta che scavalca i canali, o è meglio intenderlo come un elemento
che si snoda intorno alle rovine industriali? Cosa succede se lo poniamo
accanto alla riva e facciamo un edificio lineare che crea un waterfront? E’
bene che un singolo architetto progetti un edificio di tale portata? Come si
costruisce una mega struttura come questa? Vogliamo renderla prefabbricata? E’
una griglia che può essere riempita nel corso di un arco di tempo più lungo?
In termini di utilizzo si pongono altrettante sfide: come
possiamo inserire molti contenuti possibili in modo tale da promuovere non solo
un’intensa vita urbana, ma allo stesso tempo fare una critica dei vecchi
approcci di zonizzazione? Ad esempio, possiamo oggi pensare ad un edificio che
ospiti sia abitazioni che usi industriali? Come può un edificio come questo
beneficiare dal cambiamento economico che affrontano le aree portuali in
Europa, che ha trasformato le attività dalla produzione alla distribuzione ?
Queste e altre sono le domande che inviteremo gli studenti
a formulare durante il workshop.
